TASK 5 WHAT IS IT LIKE TO LIVE THERE?

NEWS EVENTS: There are two big events in the news in Canada today. The first one is about a man who was one of the rescuers of people from a plane crash, the
second one concerns stormy weather that had forced ferries to delay on several routes, cut power to thousands of homes and caused traffic jams on the highways.

Plane crash rescuer says he 'didn't have a plan'

Jeremy Kerr was driving near the airport when he saw the plane crash onto a city street, nearly one km short of the runways at Vancouver International Airport.
"I jumped my Jeep up onto the curb and I ran toward the aircraft," Kerr told CBC News in an interview Tuesday.
Kerr said a door on the plane opened just as he got to it."There were a couple of other rescuers arriving as well, and the door sort of fell open and a gentleman kind of stumbled out, and so we instantly helped him off [the wing] and there was another gentleman that we also helped out as well."Kerr said he and the other rescuers knew they were walking on the airplane's fuel on the ground all around them and the front of the plane was intensely on fire."The flames were massive. You knew this could blow," he said. "Something really bad could happen really quickly and it was a matter of just speed. Get these people away as fast as possible."We knew it was dangerous, what's happening, but the people are moving and the fire crews weren't there yet, we didn't hear them [coming], so we had to extract them, particularly when someone was screaming from [behind us], 'The plane's going to blow up!'The fire crew took another 20 minutes to free the pilots, who were trapped by the damage to the front of the plane.

B.C. storm cuts power, jams highways, stops ferries

According to the news articles, stormy weather has forced BC Ferries to delay ferries on several routes on Friday afternoon, cut power to thousands and caused havoc on the Coquihalla and other B.C. highways. Shortly after 2 p.m. BC Ferries began announcing ferries would not be sailing between Vancouver and Vancouver Island, and on several smaller routes until high winds subsided.

About 50,000 BC Hydro customers in the Lower Mainland, the Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island regions were without power as the wind knocked trees onto power lines during the height of the storm around 3 p.m. Then by 3:30 p.m. the wind had subsided in some areas and some of the ferries had resumed sailing, including those on the Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay route, but sailings on many routes were running behind schedule.

The storm also brought heavy snow to the Coquihalla Highway and officials were warning drivers not to use the route because of the dangerous winter driving conditions and the large number of vehicles spinning out in the snow.
